G. Hobbs, who usually opens for Old Boys, stopped a rot on Saturday and a patiently-played 39 saved the leaders m the championship from a possible defeat. All B?ack Bill Dalley and Jim Burrows also helped m the salvation of Old Boys, just scratching past Linwood's first innings total. Dalley has been batting fairly soundly this season and he and Jim •Burrows have been not only usefultall enders, but also helpful change bowlers. H. ' R. Bflcott, who was given his chance this season with Old Boys on the strength of his school* form, proved very disappointing until last Saturday, when his bowling came off well. Escott is a left-hander who' introduces a good deal of variety into his bowling and against Linwood he took three for 22 m 12 overs. ' Bill Merritt, who took his 200 th wicket for New Zealand m the second test match against the M.C.C., is quietly filling up his bag with club wickets this season and requires another 22 to complete the hundred. . F. Kerr, a consistent lilnwood batsmen, who plays leg strokes as easily as anyone m club cricket, took two valuable Old Boys wickets on Saturday. When Grose was making a stand for Old Boys he enticed him out and Mick Boon had the balls off pronto. Kerr also clean-bowled footballer Hastle for a "duck." H. - Davis is well up on the East Christchurch Club's batting average this season and saved disaster for his side on Saturday with . a soundly-played 62 against bowling of fair average standard. His score Included ten fours and a six. ' • . :• There is not a great deal of style or good workmanship about the batting of Brosnahan, of East Christchurch, but he knocks up some surprisingly good scores. . Brosnahan has Jhe faculty of getting runs when they, are badly needed.
