ENCOUNTER
SEEKING FRESH TALENT
Selectors Not Satisfied With Original Plunket Team NEW BLOOD FOR M.C.C. MATCH
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Eepresentative.) Fourteen men have been selected for practice for the M.C.C. game, the new-comers, apart from those who played m the Plunket games, being Allcott, McCoy, Cleverley and Ernie Horspool. All these players on recent form warrant a try-out.
THE final selection should see a fairly representative and solid eleven pre-i pared to face the Englishmen, and while it is not anticipated that it will have all the honors m a three-day match, It will at least give a good account of itself. If the individual members of the team do not suffer from "stage fright," they are capable of registering good tallies. The weakness will be m the attack, for the bowling is far from strong. It is, common knowledge that a word had to' be dropped m the ear of the Ponsonby selectors that they were keeping a possible rep. selection m the person of. Cleverlev iri the senior "B" ranks, with the result that m the last two games he ■was promoted. Still very ,young, this lad Is nearly, If not quite, the fastest bowler m Auckland cricket. Though very slight, he can maintain his pace remarkably well, but his , captains should remember his youth and not subject him to too great a strain. In addition, he plays a nice straight bat and altogether, with experience, should become a valuable rep. player. The veteran Horspool has earned his practice recall by his consistency this season. He has made runs regularly, and Grafton, not being overstocked with bowling talent, he has been v more than useful m that department.

There is going to be a great struggle for the last three, places m the team to meet the M.C.C. between McCoy, Mathieson, Badeley, Cleverley, Horspool and Whitelaw; those who appear certain to be picked,, business permitting, being Allcott, Mills, Weir, Gillespie, Wensley, Rowntree, Anthony and Elliott..
Fast wickets for a change caught a few batsmen- napping at Auckland last week, especially m the PonsonbyParnell contest, but In the other three games there was a curious unanimity m the totals, Eden and V.M.C.A. both scoring 223, while Shore notched 222. Thrills were the order . m Ponsonby's first innings, 7 wickets falling for 28. Flnlayson and Taylor then took the score to 54, but the last three men all succumbed at that total.

The destructive work was done by 7 Wensley, 6 for 18, and Frank Goodslr, % 4 for 24. v Eden minus Mills and Weir, fory whom places were kept, did well to get 223 against Varsity, another of the' Vivian family carrying on the traditions In an excellent knock of 64. He and Heck Gillespie (49), put on 91 for the first wicket. Mathieson did not meet with much luck with the ball and Warwick Smeeton was, the most successful trundler. . ! ' At last Shore succeeded m making a respectable total, the whole side, with but three exceptions getting double figures. The old rep., Alan Player, made 50 n.0., and materially assisted m the compilation of the total by his rocklike steadiness. Cyril Allcott kept pegging away most of the Innings and his tenacity was rewarded with 6 for 67. His worth to any side as a bowler Is Inestimable. Grafton started disastrously, losing three wickets for six. Elliott maintained his reputation as a bat by getting 62 against 'Suburbs. It was more than a useful knock as; matters '- were not going too happily at the other ; end for T.M., and care was needed for a ; time.
