Rowing CHAMPIONSHIPS

Interest Quickens In Centres (From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Rowing Correspondent.). WELLINGTON and AVanganui Regattas will be held m February. It is a pity two such popular regattas should clash. Both associations claim to have .been first m selecting the date, and neither would give way, having gone too far with arrangements. The whole trouble would have been avoided had the N.Z. Council done the right thing and made Picton decide definite'y on the date for the championship regatta earlier than was the case. Wanganui has. a more attractive programme from the point of view of donations and possibly will appeal to the Auckland crews,- but Wellington should get a good list: The rowing at both Wellington and Wanganui will be watched with great interest. in view of the championships the following week. The Champion Fours looks like providing a splendid race, m which Hamilton (the present title holders), and Picton will play a very prominent part. The present title holders are swinging along m fine style, and G. St. Clair and his mates should be at top form on February 15. Picton will row m a new fours boat. The crew -is a heavy one, capable of great things when the proper combination is attained and the best use made of the weight and strength. , Champion' sculler Turner did not row up to his best form at Tauranga. No doubt he will be m better shape at Picton, and will n, ee d to.be,' otherwise A. K. G. Jackson will regain the title. There appears to_ be a probability of.H. Pearce, ; the : O.lympic champion sculler, turning professional shortly. At all events, there is talk of the likelihood of a match, being arranged between him and Alf. Burns, the Australian professional champion. ,
