Hawkes Bay Happenings

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Hawkes Bay . Rep.) THE man at the corner has had a 1 deal to say. of. late anerit a couple of appointments made by the H.B.J.C. prior to its recent summer meeting, ahd the large majority emphatically hold that if. their interests are not given consideration m the future the olub will be minus their support. : * # # . The club is only too well known for its conservative policy m appointments, administration, etc., but even then "Truth" cannot understand its obstinaoy m not appointing a loaal man when he is fully qualified for a vacant position. * # * The public (which consists mostly of the' worßer) supplies the sinews of war, and therefore justly demands recognition, arid unless the club -drops its present attitude, the overdraft (which is at present being cultivated) will exceed expectations. ■■,-.# # * I Many wealthy men reside m this district, but their monetary support as regard's, the totalisator is as nothing m comparison to that of the . general public, yet the former has only to ask to receive, whilst the. latter, even if he. begs, hardly gets a hearing. * '■#""" * . The foregoing is based on facts, and facts that are being . debated by the public throughout this district at the present time. * „#-,•'' High Court ran very disappointingly at Ash hurst, finishing last m the Cup. The going is made . an excuse, but this time last year the same horse just gloried m the mud to win a brace of heats. „## # ■ • ! Admiral Drake has had a fairly busy time this season, racing continually since the. end of August, so trainer Gooseman is giving him a light let up. The best of this colt has not been seen yet. « .* ■ • Toxeuma has made a full recovery from his slight mishap and is bowling along attractively m his work. He will be takien through to the Taranaki and Wanganui meetings to contest the short w.f.a. events. # * * 1 Head Serang did /not perform nearly so weir at Trentham as expected here, and despite his one win many were out of pocket over his trip. That 1600 guineas that was refused for him will, keep the chestnut up m weight for some time to come.' # # » The two -year- old full -sister to the champion, Phar Lap, has not been hurried to date and has only had a couple of short sprints. 'Tis a little early yet to make any forecast, but one thing m her favor is that she can begin like greased lightning. # * * J. J. Gatenby's Weathervane— Rada colt, also m Cameron's stable, shows exceptional promise. It is on the cards that the best of this pair will accompany "Cam's"., team to Australia m the early autumn. * * * The full-brother to Hunting Cry m Bill Grifflths's stable is another youngster which is not being bustled. He is far more robust than his elder relative, but when wound up may go the same way as White Fang and Hunting Cry. ■ * * *. G. Priest has placed his Nassau mare under Wallace Young's charge. This mare is a very fair sort and Bhould win second-class handicaps. Young, has now his stable full— a reward for his integrity. # . * . • * Billie Woods will m future train Bendower, which has Just come m after a spell. The King Soult gelding went amiss last winter, just when he appeared likely to win a Hunt Club Cup. •■#.* * ' Te Awha has won only one race this season, yet she is being handicapped at the second-class meetings as though she was something above the average. ' "' __• . * * *,; At. the Gisborne meetings Singleton is m a class by himself and is being asked to give a stone and more to the next best. The Autumn gelding may not compete up there on account of soreness. *<* . * Tahoma's brother, although washy m color, is a better sort than his relative, and should furnish into a decent stake-earner. # # # Moa Bird has at' last won. Her win benefited but a few here.
