Broad siding SPINKS SHOWS THEM HOW
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Wellington Rep.) THE manner m which broadsiding has "caught on" m Wellington is indicated by the thousands who flock to Kilbirnie Stadium every night a meeting is staged. Thanks to the first-class riders who have been brought over from Australia, the management* has been fortunate m putting it over well, with the result that the sport is strongly entrenched m the Capital City. Saturday night's meeting was easily the best held this season. Front-rankers like Charlie Spinks (Australia) and Frank Pearce (Australia) provided thrills m abundance and brought the crowd to its feet with thejr brilliant exhibitions. The invitation scratch race between Spinks and Pearce was decided on two heats, both of which Spinks won m fine style. . In the first heat Spinks forced the pace from the outset, and maintained a comfortable lead all the way, to win m the record time of 80 sees., equalling Spinks's own track record. In the second heat Pearce struck trouble m the -second lap, Spinks finishing the distance m 81 2/5 sees. The big event of the evening was the Chevrolet Silver Cup race. Three riders started m the final — Spinks, Pearce and "The Mystery Rider" (some flyer too, whose identity was npt disclosed).^ . From a rolling start Spinks secured a narrow lead, with Pearce hard on his rear wheel and. the mystery rider ; a length behind Pearce. " In the second lap the mystery rider crashed, leaving the "Aussies" to fight it out. Spinks, ;though challenged every^ inch of the way, maintained the; lead and dashed past the finishing 1 post with a little m vhand. His time was 83 sees., that of Pearce being 84 sees. This race was easily the best yet seen at Kilbirnie, and the crowd was not slow m acclaiming the .winner. ; Wally Kilmister was not m form on Saturday and failed to get into the big money. On Saturday night next the star attraction at Kilbirnie will be Miss Fay Taylour, the celebrated lady rider, who arrives fresh from a series of victories against some of the best broadsiders In Australia.
