SHORT BRED
Aussie and Sydney Failures
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Sydney Rep.)
The crack New Zealand sprinter, Aussie, has failed badly at three, attempts m Sydney, arid it may be bar sinister m his breeding is tolling its tale. SHORT-BRED horses are hot uncommonly gifted with great speed, but when it comes to the strain of continuous racing and training, they afe apt to lose form and to deteriorate, whei*e a thoroughbred would improve. Not that there is any certainty that AUssie's failures have anything to do with his pedigree, but he is a very common horse m appearance, and those who are sticklers for the thoroughbred, right or wrong, are not slowto come to the conclusion that.*lh.ere is a drop of cold blood m him somewhere, and that the more racing he gets the worse his performances will be.' ■".■■■■''".■. '..!-- '.Alt'is an accepted rule that. if a halfbred is raced at all, he must be raced on a very light preparation, but Aussie's trainer stands his horse up to a lot of fast galloping under a heavy weight. ". ! There is yet time for Aussie to redeem his reputation, and it rrtay be that his loss of form is merely temporary, but it is hard to believe that a horse with his appearance is thoroughbred, and if he is not a thoroughbred he is far more likely to deteriorate than to improve. •
