LILYWHITE KINGS CROWNED
Amateurs Teach Greymouth How,; and The Town Establishes A New Record EXCELLENT CONTROL AT CHAMPS. . , A. .- ••■ •■ ,-, - .- » - .- - , - ti , ,= ; ....... A .. •? The New Zealand Amateur Boxing Championships, held m Greymouth on three successive nights, attracted boxers' fx;om all parts of the Dominion. There were many good bouts, some thrills, and some bouts which were a weariness to'! the flesh. Attendances were very large, and well maintained, ,and Greymouth is well satisfied with the second Championship held within its grates. The management was good and a fine, sporty atmosphere prevailed. There were few occasions' in which the. judge's decision was not anticipated and received cordially.
THE finals on Saturday night attracted a wonderful house. The takings were a record, being £301 for the night, a.nd swelling the gross large enough *to make it £60 above the amount taken at the championship meeting at Greymouth m 1921, which amount till Saturday stood as the New Zealand record. The management . maintained a high standard and visitors spoke ln glowing terms of the >■ typical West Coaster's hospitality meted 1 out to them. Stone, by, winning the welter division, holds the Morgan Cup for the second year m succession. After the tourney concluded the judges met and 'it was decided to award the Jameson Belt, given to the most scientific boxer at the tourney, to Johns, of- Auckland. This is the third je^r of competition, previous . winners- being - O'Sullivan (Auckland) and Hume (Wellington). The standard, taking it oh the whole; up to average, though perhaps there was no world's title at the tournament. : Still; what was displayed was enough to compensate those -who give their -time to amateur boxing.
