UP TO BEST TRADITIONS

New Zealand Cup Nominees' Big Improvement RECENT VICTORS MENTIONED (From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Christcimrch Representative). gHnmimmmimmHuimuiiiuiitimiiiiimiiimiiHmiiimiinminmniim I During the last year or two the fields for the New | ' | Zealand Cup have fallen below standard, causing the f I event to lose prestige, but the nominations this year | | promise something better. ■ |

BOTH numerically, and from the point of view, of quality, the

nominations are a big improvement on the last two years and prac-

tically everything with pretentions to

class and staying ability is represented

Three-year-olds have not enjoyed much success m the race, Indigo being

the last three-year-old to score, fifteen

years ago,- m a dead-heat with Warstep.

Five are nominated this year, Pink Coat and Admiral Draike being the only two with any two-year-old form.

The four-year-olds are a more imposing lot. .'■>.'

They include Nightmarch, winner of the Derby, Dunedin and Marton Cups, Prodice, Great Northern Guineas and Oaks, Cashier, second m the Derby, Prince Humphrey, winner of the A: J.C. Derby, Staghunter, winner of the'.G.N,, Foal Stakes, Pride, N.Z. Oaks winner, Concentrate, winner of the two St. Legers, and lesser lights m,- Chide, Tcheka, Mithra and Rabbi.

Red Heckle, the G.N. Derby winner, is the most notable absentee from horses of this age.

The five and six-year-olds and, aged

horses include Historic, Paddon, Oratrlx, Paqulto,. Pink Note, Seatown, Courageous, Bisox, Hoylake, Piutnair, Corinax, Lady "Limond, Rapier, Beau Geste, while, the old brigade are represented by. Star Stranger, Rapine and Count Cavour.

-In 'respect to the last three it must be confessed that they have had their

day and their appearance this year is a little "iffy." ,

Previous winners of the race are represented by Oratrix, Rapier and Count Cavour.

There is ample time to discuss horses individually before the event is run, but there is one horse which has set the tongues wagging since the Grand National. That horse is Historic.

He won the Winter Cup very impressively, under a big weight, and his supporters are confident that he will make a stayer.

Next to Historic,: Nightmarch, Oratrix, Rapier, Paquito, Prince Humphrey and Chide are being selected as early favorites at headquarters.

After September' 13, when Handicapper Jpe Henrys' adjustments are due to appear, the punters will have ample to think and talk atoout.
