Day of Surprises

CEVERAL. regular players were absent from the various teams, giving juniors a chance to show their mettle. As a consequence; there were one or two surprises, North Shore defeating St. Luke's by a solitary goal, and Mt. Eden defeating Varsity 5-0. Kpiphany nearly succeeded ' m opening their winning account this season against Somerville, only succumbing by the odd goal m five. Shore have to thank their defence chiefly for their victory. - Ari.thony, A. Frater and Parker were able to stall off the numerous red attacks and Monteith scored from the only real thrusting attack the Shore forwards made, though he and "R-. Frater had several unsuccessful efforts. .T. Giles, Hookham, Harding and Clark were the pick of St. Lukes, Shore's best being Anthony and the Praters. Somervilie Were all oyer ' Epiphany ; m the. first half and. Hunter got. a : leash of goals, but In the second spell, the blacks had a better share of the "■ game, Johnson and Nicholson reducing the deficit. Though they tried hard, Epiphany, could not make up all the leeway. For Somerville, Hunter, Gutfy, Taylpr, Peace and Bradshaw all did well, while the losers' best were Dunn, Hewitt and Nicholson. • . ■ Mt. Eden early asserted their supremacy over Varsity, M. and H. Jones scoring Jn, the first half, though Don was unlucky for the students. Later m the game, Chaplin, got a brace of beauties and Ash added a fifth, Varsity being unable to open their account. For the winners, m addition to the sc6rers, Vail, Surman, Kelly and Mainland jwere to the fore, while the. students' best were Don, Sparling and Storry. J
