view to publication of his remarks on the subject. There was considerable eloquence m the gesture Mr. Northcroft made with •his hand. He indicated the door and with much emphasis said: "I do not intend to speak for publication unless I have the copy submitted to me first." Mr. Hunt, S.M., when approached by "Truth" representatives, was not so reticent. He gave them to understand that he had suggested to the Auckland Crown Prosecutor, Mr. V. R. Meredith that a prosecution .for perjury be instituted against one of those who gave evidence at the inquest; or that application- be made to the Supreme Court to hold another inquest, at which all evidence should be heard, and that of Mrs. Thomasen and her sister, Mrs. Langdon, sifted. Possibly Mr. Hunt, who conducted the inquest, holds the opinion that there is very considerable evidence yet to be heard. New Zealanders are becoming- accustomed to what may be termed a policy of rule by dumb -bureaucracy. There is an official silence over the possible move the Crown may make m this most unique mystery surrounding the death of Elsie Walker, who died a tragic death within a few hours of her departure from her uncle and aunt's, home. .; There was, as "Truth" asserted last jOctober, a barrage of silence, and it still survives. With all the resources of the police with a score of keen noses, so wei have been assured, on the trail, all the results have been fruitless. At the start the police released palpable, mis-statements -.- to . the Press. These they'jaltered to suit their reasoning -as time went on. But over all there has been that black cloud of official .-.silence — and to-day it is growing. *- : ' •And there for the time being .the matter rests. : - But whatever official action may be a taken, "N.Z. Truth" has .no intention of ceasing its investigations. -V The whole of the " circumstarices warrant another official . inquiry, and this journal, speaking on behalf of the public, will not be satisfied until the fresh evidence how available has been thrashed out and every new fact, however small,. which may throw light on the mystery- of Elsie Walker's death openly disclosed and examined.
