It Has Now Gone On To Dixey (From "N.Z. Truth's" Gisborne Rep.) Although not up to provincial standard, some good contests were witnessed at the Poverty Bay championship meeting, at Gisborne, recently. Titles changed hands, though no new records were established. DV annexing, the 100 yds. ladies' dash D Miss D. Dixey fills the place of honor of district champion /forfeited by Miss N'orma ' Wilson, the lady sprinter, who retired from the track several days ago. Miss Dixey won by a splendid finishing effort. Tom Corkery accounted for both the 100 yds. and 220 yds. events. C. G. McDonald extended the winner over ; the full distance m the furlong. Corkery, however," moved up at the finish to breast the tape 2ft. ahead of McDonald; The time was 23 l/ssec. Both the -140 yds. and half-mile titles went to C. G. McDonald. The halfmile resulted m a splendid contest between M. Johns and McDonald, the latter Winning by. 2%yds. McDonald was the pacemaker throughout, though Johns challenged strongly over the final 120 yds.. H. R. F;isken fulfilled expecta- . tions m the mile, defeating P. H. 1 Francis, the Welsh international runner, by 60yds. m 4min. 44sec. Francis showed the way for the first three laps. Fisken moved through to first place when half the final lap was covered, and m one of his characteristic finishes went on to win by 60yds. The Wheelmen Good form was displayed by Paddy McMahon m annexing the half and mile, and finishing second m the threemile cycle events. He' had sound competition m each race, and was defeated only by a, wheel m the latter contest. 1 F. Pollard retained his title In the three-mile cycle race, being m a prominent position throughout. • The high jump' championship went to" J. Carron, who cleared sft. 3%in. Only three competitors attempted the pole vault event, which was won by Walter Fipdlay with a jump of 9ft. 3in. This effort was three inches below his previous, record. f A throw of 27ft. IV_ in. won Frank McDonald the shot putt title, while J. Algie annexed . the discus throw with an effort of 74ft. 9in.
