LIVES UP TO IT

Golden Ore Is Well and Truly Named ECLIPSE COrnS HIS WAY (By "The Toff"). Though slow away, Golden Ore had the Eclipse Handicap at New Brighton won a furlong from home. He is a brilliant pacer by Rey de Oro from Golden Peppin.

GOLDEN ORE is owned by Mrs. B. Carpenter, and is trained by E. S. Smith. The gelding showed great speed and stamina at Westport during the Christmas r-acing, where he spoiled his opportunities by irregular beginnings, ylt is certain that Golden Ore has only to learn to begin coi'rectly to win good races. .'-,.. The favorite, Rafa, went a level race, but never flattered his supporters. A well-bred three-year-old filly, Lady Wrack, began well and -took charge at the end-.of a furlong. She pulled hard all through the first mile and three. furlongs, with the result that she left herself high and dry when it came. to the finish, ibeing third when the distance 'was completed. When she learns to go kindly, she will win oyer short distances. V

Sonoma again began well, but was beaten a. long way from home. Baron Bingen, a brother to Great Bingen, left the barrier fast, and took second place seven furlongs from home. . , . Here J. N. Clarke kept him until the straight was reached and though the colt finished well, he met one that was too good for him m Golden Ore. Rey Child went a fair race, but had Arikitoa not broken at the start he- would have disputed the finish. V ■ Even after losing a lot of ground at the start he finished fast m fourth place, being only a head (behind Lady Wrack at the finish.. The first half-mile was run m 1.13 4-5, the mile m 2.24 4-5 and twelve furlongs m 3.32 1-5.
