GALLOPING
Too Mu(£o£lt y At Trots UNTO WANTED -N ■ ■ - ■ . . . '■ ' .. (From 1 "N.Z./ Truth's" North Island Rep.) Laurier's connections were unfortunate m -missing the Palmerston North Stakes after winning it at Manawatu.. V T'HE stewards, cannot be taken, to task for 'deciding to alter the judge's placlngs because of urineceseary galloping. ' -, ■....■'.. But quite a number of trotters m the past at other meetings have "galloped" considerably more than Laurier did without* suffering the same penalty. As a matter of fact, galloping from a "break" was indulged m" by all three place-getters at Manawatu. The stewards - evidently con- , sidered Wild Lad was the least to blame and decided that the winner, Laurier, and the third horse, Alton Brook, must be penalised* The placlngs between Laurier. and Wild Lad were reversed, while Driver Berkett, of the third horse, Alton Brook, was fined a fiver. He would have lost third money had the fourth horse been close enough to be seriously considered^ '■'■■' As a matter of fact, there was fully 9 seconds between the , third and fourth. Now that the Manawatu Club, under Stipendiary Reid, has taken a stand against . unnecessary galloping m trotting races, it is up to all clubs to be consistent m the matter and put a final stop to these "galloping" tactics.
