POLICE DISTURB POPPY DREAMS

WHEN three detectives climbed stealthily up a ladder and through the window of a Chinese residence m Grey Avenue one night recently for the purpose of searching for Wong Sing, who had overstayed his welcome m this country, their visit developed into an opium raid. Behind barred doors, eight Chinamen sprawled on rugs enjoying their pipe dreams, when they t were rudely awakened by the sudden intrusion. The'elght offenders were convicted and fyied v £2s each for being m possession of prepared opium, and Wong Ah was fined £100 for being . the keeper of the premises. Wong Sing, the Chinaman the police stated they were . searching for, was fined an additional £25 for overstaying the period^, allowed by his permit.
