HOWE SHOWED HOW
Gave Wild West Display, but FOXTON HAD SOME THRILL . ■ ■ '.(Fromi "N.Z. Truth's" Foxton Representative) . There were no clicking cameras nor a director yelling 1 ih- " structions through a megaphone when James Henry Howe galloped into the main street of Foxton and tried hard to emulate Tom Mix by riding his horse into various shops. Howe was merely suffering from an over indulgence m liquor, and his exuberance of spirits caused his sudden deflection from the path of propriety,
ARRIVING from 'the .back-blocks of "Motuiti, mounted, on a perfectly respectable hack, Howe proceeded to pay business palls about the town. He. did not choose ordinary methods. Mounted on his hofse,Howe guided his steed into the doorway,; of the local banking 'institution and bowied gravely to the' occupants. ;..,.- : '.i ; \yy v .vy . A few minutes there«arid'the'"horsemari backed ■ into V^hejystreet. /He trotted downyythe \''|ootpatn',y scattering pedestriani m; aiiydireict;i6ns, and pulled up outside a shop.- '^ . ' Howe would no doubt have visited every shop m this unorthodox manner, but for the fact that the local constable arrived m response to an urgent summons. It cost the constable a big struggle and a lot of wasted energy before , he filially managed to get Howe and his horse into the police-station yard.,
Howe, then awoke to real action. He realised his plight and, digging spurs into his mount, galloped towards the gates. The horse, m being* turned, knocked the constable , down. In the meantime, the latter's ■ wife had appeared on the scene and she rushed, to the gates and closed them as Ho.we arrived. He was soon overpowered and confined m a cell. Feeling more like a mere pedestrian than a horseman, Howe appeared m the court the following day and admitted* being drunk m charge of a horse and resisting a constable m the course of his duty. The justices were content . to fine Howe £6 qn the , two charges,, but stressed the point that had there been children about at the time, the charge might have been* more serious. ' ' .
