ADVICE ON ECONOMY
If you are so fortunate as to belong to the order;:ofHhe- rich, then economy m underwear will not concern you a- great deal.
, But if you are among the vgirls who live on a very limited income, and tnerefore have, to watch your spare pence with- a wary eye,'then-the following suggestions, may be of help.:
F'XCEPT for wear under really fussy Hi ; frocks, elaborate underwear is seldom seen, which is just as well, for: a plethora of embroidery means a tremendous amount of work, even -to the most industrious hands. - ;; Lace is ho longer considered the best means of 'trimming, and this is iifdeled a blessing: for the girl 'who launders her own clothes. ■ • : ■ She. will find that a total of'handworked embroidery and ..a colored bi nd - ing look just as effective as lace which, xmless it is coarse, seldom, wears well. A set or two of; crepe de chine undies Is always a worth-while possession, but if you can't run to this comparatively expensive silk, then do "not invest m the cheaper japs, for they will not stand up to the inevitable 1 wear and tear, of the wash-tub. ; If you yearn for silken lingerie at a reasonable price, you can't do better than buy Shantung f ujl or' China silk. They. usually come m good widths, wear wonderfully' well, and always retain their sheen. Good cotton is a far better, medium for underwear than flimsy cheap silks, and there is a very wide "choice of cotton goods to choose, from. Fine linen, tarahtulle, floral lawn, mercerised and lingerie lawn are all hard-wearing, soft and' useful materials. , ... • ' Scalloped hems outlined with colored bindings, which should be narrow and hand-sewn, are one of the fads of the moment. . ■ V-necks, bound and finished m front with a touch of embroidery, true lover's knots or. tiny baskets of colored silk flowers, are favoredfor nightgowns. The same garments look, weir if tiny V-shaped pockets are placed above the knees on either side of the front of. the nightgowns, which should be cut without sleeves. . .-.-.• Fine but strong net inlets are always pretty on underwear, and they give. a good look to the humblest garments. Bloomers" are still unsurpassed for popular wear, buE remember — do not cut them from slovenly measurements.
A reliable pattern should be ob't§ihed, and will riiake all the differencevW-the set of your skirts. Also, badlySmade garments of this kind ' are seidoni 'really comfortable. % '■- ■' . ' ■ U/.'
