After a week of strenuous competition m the Williamstown ranges, m weather conditions that ranged from perfect to . extremely ■ tricky; the New Zealand riflemen who competed m the annual matches with the Victorian Rifle Association, enhanced the high reputation always enjoyed by the Dominion's marksmen. DRACTICALIiY every member of the team was m the prize-money at one time or other and though it did not fall >to the lot of a New Zealander to carry off the coveted King's Prize, they had the satisfaction of seeing one of their number finish m second place. ; The eventful feature of the meeting •: was the- dramatic failure of W. H. Fea6t, Greytown, New

Zealand, who, at the 1800 yds. stage was equal, ..first, with R. W. Palmer, and six points ahead of the ultimate winner of the King's Prize. . Feast was one of the first to shoot at the last range at 900 yds., and was on the extreme right, where he had very little assistance from flags. He began with a magpie for the first sighter and followed it by a bullseye which he kept. Then five kisses m succession went on his board and ruined any chance he had, for he finished with the extraordinary total of sixteen points. D. Keir, Ashburton, with forty-five for this range, shot himself into second position, winning £40. F. H. ' James, Napier, finished fifth, which netted him £3 0. New Zealand match-winners throughout the meeting were F. Hi" James, Napier, TV. Mclver, Petone, D. Root, Patea arid D. Keir, Ashburton. * In- : aggregate,' the prize-money won by these and other members 'reached nearly £200. . ■ . , Although defeated by Victoria by one point m the Merrett Teams' Match, New Zealanders retrieved their reputation by giving Victoria 'a thorough trouncing m the triangular match m which Tasmania also competed.
