HINKLER MISSES A PLAGE
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Melbourne Representative). OINKLER was beaten out of a place m the Victorian Derby. He was undoubtedly the best youngster m the field and was beaten, not because he met better horses, but because he had all the bad luck of the race. ''.''' ' : - '•. ' ' ■ ''. .' - •■ . Prior to the start he was giving trouble, rearing up and backing out of the line. Balloch tried to coax him to settje down, and then tried to bounce him, as. he used, the whip on him, but when the barrier went up he was a couple of lengths behind the other horses. As soon as he moved off, a couple of other runners came over on him and squeezed him out, with the result that he was last when he settled down, giving the leader a long start. He made up his ground very quickly, rather too quickly as a matter of fact, for although running third with half a mile to go, he tired over the last little bit, only finishing fifth. The winner, My Chum, comes from Junes, New South Wales, and is the winner of the Goulburn Pacing Derby. . The youngsters m the Free-legged Division of the Derby were a very poor lot, as the winner, Fair Admiral, only went at 2.46 gait.
