HIS SECURITY
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Gisborne Rep.) ' The extremely simple manner m ; which a money-lender was taken down for the sum of £20 was explained m the Gisborne Police ■ Court, when Herbert Mortimer * Robertson was charged with false pretences. LIKE many others, m the winter of i 1927 Roberstou found himself hard UP, and having a destitute wife and family he conceived a somewhat novel method of obtaining sustenance for them. Renting a furnished house, lie apprbached a money-lender, Samuel Dudley, and his agent, Henry. ISwart Hill, J.P., for a. loan, offering the furniture m the house as security. • \ < ■" The advance was obtained with- ! •'. out difficulty, and it was not until, satisfaction was sought that the true position was learned' and the ' matter placed m the hands of the police. . > , I Robertson, however, was given quite a good reporf by the police, his lapse being explained by the unaccustomed penury m which he found himself. His people' had now come to Gisborne to look after him, and if was suggested > that a term- of probation would meet the case. This proposal -.wa.s.adoptel 'by 4he •bench, and Robertson will haA'e ■to comply. with the usual conditions for 18 months, • and make restitution at 1 the rate of £2 per month. '
