PORTRAIT , SALESMAN IN TROUBLE
it JUST a line to let you know I am going for my life and am fifteen ° up," wrote Charles Barrie Sutcliffe to his boss, Jack Sullings, manager of the Dominion Portrait Co. The "fifteen up" referred Jo orders he had secured. Barrie collected part commission on these and other orders but when, a few days later, they arrived at the firm's office m Wellington it was discovered that of the nineteen orders, 17 were made out to Sutcliffe himself and with each accompanied a scenic postcard for enlargement, etc. They were never executed. "| Of course, Sullings wanted to know the why and wherefore of the transaction, but Sutcliffe had moved on to Auckland. On January 26, while m Auckland, Sullings heard that his star salesman had joined with a rival concern. He laid a, complaint with the police and issued, a warrant charging Sutcliffe with obtaining money by false pretense. A few days ago m the Wellington Police Court, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., Sutcliffe appeared to answer the charge. Through his\ counsel, Mr. A. J. Mazengarb, however, he .elected to go before a jury, 'reserved his defence, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Mr. Mazengarb, when the facts of the case had been placed before the bench, stated there was no case to answer, but Mr. Hunt thought otherwise. Bail as before, m his own bond of £25, was granted Sutcliffe.
