ALL THE MILERS
WINNER WELL HIDDEN
Thompson Handicap Has Attracted Best
Though not the best endowed mile race m the country there Is no doubt that the Thompson Handicap, run at Trentham, brings together the best horses m the land.
WELLINGTON'S geographical position allows horses from all parts of the two islands to meet on a track that is well nigh perfect. / The handicaps for this year's big mile are out and they could only be improved on by the addition of the names of Limerick, Aussie, Commendation and Red Heckle. That Reremoana, with his increasing years, is still the best m the land Bert Coyle indicates ,by giving him 9.7. He is not likely to run, having an engagement m the Challenge that day. PegaWay at 9.3 is set a big jab, 'but not an impossible one. He is a good beginner and hangs on to the very last — two necessary essentials m a Thompson.'' Rapier and Paganelli each has 9.8, and Rapier <will be more m demand, but with two pounds less is Joy King, which may be good enough to make it two on end. / With 8.7 Gascony would be a prime wager, all being well wjth him, but he is not to run. Rapine is on the same figure, but the journey does not suit, Nightmareh Is m with a pound under weight-for-age with 8.5 and he
will be one of the hardest to beat. Last year, Bright Glow would have won with an even break at the jump away arid she is still more than useful.' '•■.■•■ I The next four— The Hawk, Star Area, Silver Paper and White 'Fang — complete the eight-stone division and each and all will have supporters. They are certainly a dangerous quartette, but to "N.Z. Truth"; White Fang is best liked. His running this week at Napier Park may give some better idea -of his prospects. With 7.11 each,' ln The Shade should hold Ruanui safely, and his stable mate,. High Finance, is given more than an outside show: by northerners. Meadow Lark may peter out. the last bit, but Joy Bird will run on, especially if she hits the front m the early stages. Lysander has . been dropped to 7.7 and he would come home backwards if he would only gallop. • The 'bottom part should not hold any terrors, the select of them being Moa Bird, Merry Mint and Full Feather.
