Tale of Husband Who Was Dying jWOMAN'S BLUFF
(From "N.Z. Truth's" ' Christchurch Hep.) ' , Mrs. Kathleen Frances Regan, of Christchurch, wanted to see her husband, who was working at Amberley. The obstacle seemed to be that she had no money. So Mrs. Regan hit on the bright idea of "putting over" to Rink Taxis Ltd. the tale that her husband was dying, and that she must go to him! CHE rang upthe garage and told the , man m the offlce the sad tale, breaking to him the news that she lacked -money. • The man m the office would not accept the responsibility of ordering out a car under the circumstances, so he communicated with Mr. Hayward. The result was that Hayward was touched— in more ways than one. There are sob stories and sob stories, but this one . was certainly original, though m some ways if seems to resemble the office-boy's favorite palaver about his grandmother. And so, as a result of her pathetic pleadings, Mrs. Regan went to Amberley. Now for the sequel. Mrs. Regan, later, was charged m the . Christchurch Magistrate's Court, before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., with obtaining credit by fraud from the Rink Taxis, Ltd., on November 28, by incurring a liability of £5 to the firm. She pleaded guilty. * Mr. M. J. Burns, appeared for her. He explained her conduct by saying that she was overwrought by the fractiousness of her very old father, who had been m her care. "On this particular afternoon the woman reached the end of her tethdi% and conceived the idea of getting to rjer" husband' by saying, that he was dying." * Counsel added that the woman had expected to be able to pay the £5 off bit by bit, but her husband had been out of work. ' "The old man died about a fortnight ago," said counsel. "He. left a small* estate, and the bill can he paid through that." The magistrate convicted Mrs. Regan, and ordered her to come up fori sentence within six months if called upon. He ordered that tha money should be paid. * |
