Aussie-hred Glide away Did The Trick In Two Mile Cup Handicap THE RACE WAS TAILOR-MADE FOR TOMKINSON
— o (From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) It was no slide away victory when Glideaway came home for the big end of doings m the Otahuhu Cup.
TAKING the running throughout the pace was made to order for Tomkinson's mare, for they certainly made things easy over the first mile. Well, that was the impression gleaned by numerous astute patrons on the day. All the same, the Australianbred mare may have won had they stepped on the gas from the barrier to the judge. Young Len. Layer, making his first public appearance as a driver of the light-harness stock, quickly hopped Nelson Tasker to the front and once m the van set his own pace. stage, Glideaway smoked along to hit the front as they caught a view of the final post. Nelson Tasker then cried enough, but Jean McElwyn came again and Harvest Child also figured m the picture with Dundas Boy giving it a go. It appeared to those on the main stand that Jean McElwyn would prevail. . But she gasped for breath half-way up the straight and Avent under to Glideaway by half a length. Harvest Child found it a hard job to be third and Dundas Boy was set a tough proposition to finish next. The race itself was interesting, for with the exception of Machine Gun and The Abbey, which collided, the remainder were never far away. Glideaway is not a great deal to look at, but certainly can muster up the speed.
