IT is true the proposal' may not stMt ' a small section of owners aim trainers, but nevertheless "N.Z. Truth" asserts that if a ballot were taken of everybody interested m the galloping game there would be found an overwhelming majority m favor of a change. - , It is ridiculous to contend that the much «deslred bracketing would not work, for it has already been tested for years at trotting m this country and given complete satisfaction. '■•■ The •"•■ present- livening up of the bracketing question has all come about .pyer thefact thata fair proportion* of punters "were " badly left lamenting when Lbrierit :11. won the Tourist Handicap at Te Aroha, with Ti Tree outside a dividend place. Both ha.il from J. T. Jamieson's stable, but being owned by different sportsmen they were not coupled, and there was much concern among punters generally when operations started on the tote. All. manner of wild rumors were afloat and the result was that quite a number of experienced punters lost their cash when Ti Tree missed ' the money, while besides outsiders It is stated that even some patrons of the
Jamieson stable were also on the ■wrong way. As a matter of fact, rumor has it that Trainer Jamieson himself is m the position to be able to prove that he supported the loser. There was real justification for supporting both horses, but perhaps more m favor of Lorient 11., wnen it was taken into consideration that the first horseman to the, stable (H. Goldfinch) was found aboard the English importation. However, there is no denying the fact that the Lorient ll— Ti Tree affair has done much to gain converts to tne proposal to bracket all horses from the same stable. ; : . There is no solid reason why the racing authorities should delay m the matter, and the general wish of racegoers is that the proposal be fully discussed 6y the Conference at its next anniial meeting. The present non- bracketing system is certainly not a fair thing to punters, while at times it brings much trouble to trainers. There is. a way out, and it should be adopted so far as the totalisator is concerned.
