WHEN Batchelor appeared on remand he was charged, m addition to the original charge of theft of £986 from Leonard Percival Voice, on x second count of fraudulently applying a sum of £300, the property of Georgina Marie Cairns, thereby committing theft. . . ! .; The plea was advanced by counsel that '• were Batchelor released on bail he would be of material assistance to the Official Assignee, who has had m hand for the past five months the clearing up of the accused's estate. Chief-detective Carroll . opposed counsel's application, stating that the Crown was ready to proceed with the two charges mentioned, but they required a further time to investigate a third charge m which " they believed ' an excessive claim had been lodged by a creditor. March 5 the Crown proposed going on with the two charges. Mr. . stated on behalf of Batchelor that it was a relief to him that he was no longer a. hunted criminal. He had had many opportunities to escape since being arrested m Victoria, but. had made no effort to get" away. , At one stage of the proceedings the magistrate, Mr. E. D. Mosley, mentioned bail m sureties of £2000 and two of £.1000, but after discussing the matter very fully with counsel and the chief-detective he declined the application. J So until his trial, Batchelor remains confined. in Paparua and is escorted when required to the Official Assignee's office,; where the claims by clients against his estate are being investigated. , ,
