♦ Legal Pitfalls In Dry Area COSTLY BREACr(From "N.Z. Truth's" Dunedin Rep.) Recently "N.Z. Truth" reported upon a case which was suggested as being the first official record of. a man being drunk m charge of a steam-roller. COMETHING of .the circumstance: leading up to his condition i.-' nov disclosed m the narration of Manue Godfrey Shepherd's recent trip fron Balclutha to Dunedin and part-waj back. Si>Rphe"d is a car-service carrier and Balolutha i* a "dry" district. Thes< two fac*s iiist r-bout sum up the reasoi for sundry parrels- of liciuor being ii Shepherd's on.v when he met his friem at Green Island on the way back t( Balclutha. On February 9, Shepherd set out Ir his car and on reaching Dunedin h< had many important purchases t( make. Had he, on hitting the trail foi •Clutha, kept straight on instead o: guggesting a drink when he met his friend, perhaps the police would hav< been none the wiser about his valuable cargo. After pleading guilty at the Dunedm Police Court before Mr. H. W. Bundle, S.M., to several charges affecting the prohibition laws and one of being drunk m charge of a loVry, S^«.pherd was remanrfp-d on bail, pending a police report from his home town. On his second appearance, he was convicted a rid fined £5 on the charge of being d'-nnk while m rhnrge of r lorry, and debarred from driving a cai m a no -license area for six months. On the other counts, tbe police repon being non-Riippre^tive of sly-grogginpr he was convicted and fined £5 witl costs. For those living m drought areas Shepherd's technical breaches of th« law .'>re worth bearing m mind. They arc: (1) Being a carrier, did attempt to take liquor into a no-license district without being m possession o1 an order with the purchaser's address occupation and signature; (2) on behalf of W. Lowie. Balclutha, did obtair one bottle of whisky without forma] notification, and (3) did obtain sb bottles of whisky and one of wine from Lane and Co., Dunedin, without notifying that it was for a prohibition district, and without a signed order.
