Whispers From Wanganui
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Wanganui Rep.) If the last has been seen of Lysander on the race track, many punters will probably be .glad. # ' # * ■ It is a pity to see such a brilliant galloper as the son of Absurd-Pen-non once was, making inglorious displays such as he did at Wanganui. # # # Repeatedly Lysander has put up excellent gallops on the tracks, and his trainer and owner have hacl every reason to think he would show a return to form. , ' ' ■ ♦ * *. However, he let them down badly m both his races, and his chances are he will be retired to the stud, where, on appearances, he should make good. #• # * Yoma pulled m a bit lame after the Wanganui Cup race, m which the Campfire gelding made a game effort — worthy of a grandson of Carbine. * *" # Laughing Prince electrified track watchers before the meeting by running a mile from almost a standing start m 1.41. Nothing better has ever been done on the track, and it was consequently not surprising that he should have been made favorite for the Cup. s#* • ' The pnee was mnde a cracker by I Bright Glow, and this did not suit ■Laughing Prince. The son of Quantock likes time to settle clown, but he was kept too busy m the early stages to be seen at his best at the business end. * « • Some years ago, TV. McA. Duncan owned some good horses, including Client and Tamatete, hut his luck had been out until last week, when Freehold won two rnces for him and Glenartrey one at Wanganui. . # # # Last year Freehold won the Juvenile Handicap and at Wanganui last, Glenartrey 'scored m the same event, • * * F. Tilley does not believe m the e-irly racing of two-year-olds and Glenartney was not seen out until Christmas time, and then more for educational purp»ses. The son of Hunting Song has made steady improvement since, and at Wanganui won m a style which suggests that he will be heard of m better company later on. * * * Freehold did not shape well early m the season, but his form at Wanganui was good. * * » Some thought Bert Coyle had been rather hard on Freehold m giving him 9.3 m the Petre Hack, but the son of Absurd-Tatua won well. • He capped this performance on Saturday by carrying 9.11 to victory m the excellent time of 1.14. Is he going to prove another Tamatete? * # * .' Mendip sprinted half a mile m 48 on the Wanganui track before the meeting. He was beaten out of a place m the Steward's, but ran Star Area to a head m the big money the second, day. * # « Probably the best half ever run m Wanganui was that registered by Ceremony prior to going to Auckland. He cut out the distance m 47. Ceremony appears m great heart, and should run a big race, all going well, m- the Manawatu Sires Produce. Stakes. ' ■ ' ■ ...-..■ « ■*•.".» T. Long was disappointed with C.Qbham's performance m the Maiden at Wanganui. The English-bred geld-, ing was never m the picture. « * * Star Area was not himself at the Egmont meeting, but N. Gardner had him m great fettle for the Wanganui. The Acre gelding won each day like a. racehorse his performance m the Barle Stakes being a particularly fine one. * # # Star Area is engaged m the Rangitikei Cup and- looks a cut above the others, except Queen Arch.
