WANGANUI MINOR RACES
Comfortably-sized Events Will Interest Backers
With its roiiiid-the-comer-and-home-track it is not to the advantage of the Wanganui Club to have big fields.
WHAT they make up m the way of nomination and acceptance fees they lose m revenue off the tote. Big fields on saucer courses fail to attract the attention that comfortablesized fields do. To-day the minor paces are of the latter dimension and speculation should be keen. The Maiden race opens the day, and as Fred Tilley always has a big following on the course, High Falutin' should come into the picture — m the betting at least. He has shown up m better class than this, and here is his opportunity to win one. • Cobham is said to have impi'ovea a lot since he last raced, while Naselle, m an outing at Foxton, caused many to mark him for a race of this type. Endorse, Vaucluse and Marica are speedy, but do not run it right out. High Falutin; and Naselle are a likely pair to claim attention. "Hipo, by his doings at New Plymouth, must be considered m the Stewards. Could the handicapper have another go at him he would get several more pounds on his back. Star Area has his running at Awapuni at Christmas to recommend him, while Partaga should soon be showing his consistency of the past. Mendip is apparently to be kept for this class of event, which m the past has suited him best.
When the machine closes two that will carry heavy support are Hipo. and Star Area. The first half of the handicap represents the winning form m the Westmere Hurdles. Royal Acre stifled himself at New Plymouth and was not to be a runner. Glengariif, ridden m behind these days, finishes on well, and he has paid two successive dividends. Elicit won at Foxton, and if he can manage the journey may trouble the top-weight most. ' The two three-year-olds, Cashier and Roi de.Val, head the Victory Handicap field, and the spoil may go their way. Down lower are The Warden and Acred, AVhile with only . two pounds above the minimum is Balloon, which likes a bit of ground. But the form of the three-year-olds cannot be passed by lightly. In the Juvenile most will be prepared to take the risk of Glenai-tney being managed. If his rider can keep him 'on the course on the turns he would win on Trentham running. At New Plymouth Royal Finance did not show her best, but she was knocked about at' Takapuna and this set her back. Miss Ransom is back to form andj that will bring her support m the Petre. *.. Freehold and Cool Mint go along well, but if Lucky Bag could return to her best she would make them travel.
