IT is a long cry back to the last northern invasion of Wingatui, the most recent success being recorded by Bill Hawthorn m 1922, when he won the. Cup with Trespass -and. carried off other races with lesser lights m the team. But George P,aul is on tap this year with Papatu to represent him m the Cup, and Aussie, king of the Auckland milers, to dispute the issue with the best horse m the land. Leaving out those with no more chance than the late lamented Mr. Buckley, the most serious opposition^ possibly will come from Rapier and Count Cavour. • Nightmarch is an unlikely starter, while Silver Paper, which was to be withdrawn from the Publicans' Handicap and reserved for the mile weight-for-age race, has gone Avrong, through damaging a leg Avhile cast, m his box last Thursday night. • • Rapier has not had a race since the New Zealand Cup meeting, and while his spin m the open sprint on the first day will sharpen him up for the mile classic, it must be confessed that, at the distance, he cannot be expected to make the event more than interesting. self undoubtedly the superior of anything m the Auckland province up to a mile at either handicaps or weight-for-age, but up till the present time he has not been pitted against anything of the class of Limerick. Limerick is due for another invasion on Australia, and his outing on Saturday will serve to satisfy Fred Jones on the gelding's chance when he steps out against Gothic and the rest of Australia's champion weight-for-agers. The Riccarton champion has been bowling along m his track work . , m a manner which suggests he will lack nothing m condition and will be a very few steps below, his best by ~ " Saturday. Admitting that Aussie is the classiest horse m the north over the distance, H. A.
