Now Bring Out Your Arne Borg !
A WEEK ago he was unsung and unheard of m the national swimming world. To-day he is champion over three distances and probably will add a fourth to his collection. He is Alec. Stokes, the Canterbury youth, breaker of records and o':her, things at the national swimming championships being held m Wellington this week. When a very select bunch lined out for tho 220 on Monday, Alec, was third favorite m a field comprising Enwright, Bridson and Lindsay, of Auckland,. Claridge, of Wellington, and himself. When the starter gave the word Claridge shot to the front, but Bridson soon took up the role of pacemaker from Lindsay and Stokes. Thus they remained to 150 yds. when Stokes shewed his worth. He picked up his leeway m a remarkable manner and turned over the last twenty ahead of Lindsay and Bridson. ' . It was no race after that. Stokes won easily m record time and the good thing, Bridson, was third to Lindsay. Stokes is going to be a great swimmer with more experience. Canterbury says, "Now bring out your Arne Borg" and though this may be premature, Stokes certainly will learn a lot from the little Swede.
