Stokes's Distance Success LINDSAY OUT (From "N.Z. Truth's" Wellington Rep.) Everybody wondered what was the matter with Dave Lindsay m the mile swim for 9 the title. TN the final of this event m the N.Z. •*• swimming championships, which commenced here on Saturday, insufficient training seemed to have found him out. At any rate, he wasn't the Lindsay who went over to the Games. He finished second. Stokes, from Canterbury, swam a perfect mile, conserving his energy throughout. Although he finished eleven yards ahead of Lindsay, he could not, or, rather, did not reduce the time notched by Lindsay m Dunedin last year. Lindsay's clocking at last year's champs, showed 23 mm. 36 4/5 sec, whereas Stokes's time on Saturday was 24 mm. 4/5 sec. Still, it was under standard time, which is 26 mm. 35 sec; and he well merited the ovation he received when he tipped the hemp, ahead of Lindsay and streets ahead of Bridson, who seemed palpably out of training. A good lad, ■ Stokes. One who is popular with his fellow-competitors, and with the public, too. j
