WINGATUI IS TO STAGE BEST RACE OF THE YEAR
TWO CHAMPIONS WILL MEET
George Paul Keeps A Promise and Treks South With Aussie To Meet The Wonder- Horse, Limerick
SOME many months ago, when Les. Hill was appointed to the secretaryship of the, Dunedin Jockey Club, George % Paul made to him a promise. Paul was always a visitor to Whangarei—where Hill had charge before x liis transfer ito the south. When Hill's shift came about, Paul told Les. that if he ever got together a good team he would trek down south and try his luck on the Wirigatui course.
There was a promise made from
one gentleman to another. And the
clay has arrived and Paul is honoring the promise he gave. k
Aussie, going from success to success, placed Paul : m the position of owning and training- one of the best horses m the :country. His appearance at any meeting was a big draw, and neither weight nor company could Btop his run of successes. But weight, m the long run will stay the progress of the best of them, and Aussie was left a limited field to explore.. It will be weight for age races for him m: the future. Dunedin has one on its autumn programme < the all highest were invoked to get Aussie's name m the list of nominations for the Hazlett Memorial. Of Limerick's name they never worried a great deal. His presence was next door to a certainty. The prayer was answered and, with Aussie an entry, part of the battle was won, but then it was a. big gap
Promises are easy to make, and far more easier to break, but George Paul is a man of his word. To him a promise is a , contract to be fulfilled, if it is at all humanly possible.
between an entry and an appearance
The club, realizing the wonderful attraction the meeting of the two champions would be, dispatched the secretary to Trentham to coax Paul to the meeting.
Now, George is a careful fellow and he likes to see over a fence before he jumps it.
The winning of a race at Trentham would have- made the trip almost a certainty, but, alas,> his share of the money on offer was £150, third money m the Cup,' won by Papatu. Hopes died m the breasts of the Dunedin but Paul remembered the promise he gave to Hill, and down ,he went.
Aussie, accompanied by Papatu, is now . at Wingatui arid the pair will know something of the course— and that hill up the back — when the deciding day arrives.
Home at Riccarton, Limerick is going along nicely m his work, and by the time of the event he will be as far forward as Fred Jones can get him without an actual. race.
Jones is going to Sydney for the autumn and, as he remarked at Trentham, he has to have a race with Limerick to find out if all is right.
"'One race is worth a dozen track gallops," quoth Fred. Aussie, on the score of condition, is going to come m better than Limerick. The racing Aussie has had is of all importance. Limerick, on the other hand, has not raced m public since he went wrong m the Craven Plate at Randwick last October. But his lack of racing may more than be made up by 'his class. He has beaten the best m two countries. The same cannot be said of Aussie, and especially is this so when his victories over a mile are analysed. On weight-for-age terms, with penalties, both will be saddled with 9.8. ! Bert Ellis will ride Limerick and Bert Tinker, Aussie, that is if he can j get away from a meeting up north. In Tinker's absence, Stan. Bagby will take the ride. - , Dunedin is a club that has been languishing- m recent years, but the race of Saturday week will bring much money to "the coffers. It will, m a lesser degree, rival the match between Gloaming and The Hawk m the celebrated Ormond Gold Cup of 1925. : . ■ And all brought about because* of a promise that was made— and honored. iiiiiiniiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiMiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
