THE BIGGER THEY ARE
Just Case of David and Goliath Over Again Tommy Donovan astonished his most enthusiastic admirers at Waitara when he knocked out Joe Boyle half-way through the second round. .
He was tired at the close and his ribs showed red.
TOMMY was originally billed to Dox 1 Mark Carroll, but that boxer injured his hand, and Boyle, who has come over to box Leckie, filled the biil at the last moment. Though realizing the disparity m weights, Tommy made no bones about taking it on. The announcer gave it out: "On my right Tommy Donovan, 8.11; on my left, Joe Boyle, 10st.". .' There looked the. 171bs. difference. Boyle had the advantage of height and reach as well. Tommy's stocky frame was m the pink — Boyle's was not, and that told the tale. . "It's a shame," surveyed Boyle, as he left his corner, referi-ing to the disparity m weight, and early m the first round he appeared to be holding back his punches. . Not for long, though, as he found Tommy like a hornet, letting loose stinging ones to the body; Early he got one home tp the solar and Boyle grunted, though Joe later swung some good ones to the face.
Donovan made matters hot m the opening of round two, and connected solidly to the jaw, having his man on the ropes. i He then sent m a short jolt to the solar plexus, after Boyle had made a few wild swings, and down went the Australian to take the count. He appeared to be writhing m pain, obviously claiming a foul, so Referee MaxAvell called on Drs. Walker arid Adamson, who could see no marks, and Donovan was declared winner amidst wild applause. Tommy is an improved fighter. He is now concentrating on the body and scoring hard. He is as elusive as ever. Boyle will do better when m condition. He was well above his correct weight, but even allowing m for his obvious unfitness, he should have performed more creditably. Donovan is going to be a big asset to Taranaki, and the little fellow has the brains to learn to walk before he tries to run.
