Over-working Rotorua

TT is well that the Prime Minister is convinced that undoubtedly the Tourist Department has been starved of requisite financial support. '

It is comforting also to hear that "steps will be taken to overcome the position without any unnecessary delay," and that "the matter will be further dealt with by Cabinet early this week. " When, or rather if the question does come before an early assembly of Cabinet, there should also be raised the proposition that Rotorua and its attendant propaganda overshadows the attractions of New Zealand's other tourist attractions to an unjustified degree. AVhether this is due to a 'short-sighted view of the Tourist Department, or to the comparative indifference with which previous Governments have regarded the development of other scenic wonders, is not the point. The core of the matter is that while Kotorua is a remarkable example of thermal activity, it is but one of our national attributes capable of intriguing the somtv | what blase travellers who would otherwise skirt New Zealand shores. ; Yet, the traveller front other parts h as "'■ ' Rotorua, Botorua, ! ' j clanging m his heading, while 'Mount Cook, Milford Sound and many other places of Nature 's delightful. fashioning, remain, with their praises largely unsung. We commend these observations to the acute judgment of Sir Joseph Ward and the members of his Cabinet with the suggestion^ also that the whole question of iscenic resorts should be reviewed;, .'.and a comprehensive '•policy' 1 introduced m the carrying out of which ; our: national beauty spots and scenic attractions m both Islands would 'draw their full quota of tourists'.
