The astonishing allegation that he had been sent out from England by his mother to find two of her children, who had been taken away from her by his father, was made by Sylvester Clarence Longstaff, 28, m a Melbourne court. LIE was charged with having assault- *' ed his father, Charles William Longstaff, -\\-ho is an overseer at tiic Victorian Homes, Royal Park, and with having resisted Constable Phillips. According to the father, the young man walked into his private quarters at the Victorian Homes*. Ho was requested to leave, but. became abusive. "I sent for' Constable Phillips," said Longstaff, "and when he came m my son punched me m the chest. When I gave 'him m charge he violently resisted the constable." The son's story -was that he landed from England a few days ago. and immediately went with a friend to see his father, whom he knew was at the Victorian Homes. "He left my mother some time ago," said the young man, "and came out here with her two children and another woman. "He has ill-treated me ever since I can remember, and used to kick my mother and pour boiling water on her! If I tried to separate them, he would give me a black eye. "My mother asked me to come out here and try to find her children, but when I saw my father at Royal Park he refused to tell me, and called a policeman. My father would, not do anything while my friend was with me, but waited until he went a\vaj r . "Then he said to. the constable: 'Come on, we'll put him outside!' They got hold of me, and my .father started kicking me when I. was on the floor. The skin is «off my shoulder and my mouth is cut inside."
