THE GOLDEN ARROW
" The car m which Major H. O. D. Seagrave will attempt to recapture the World's Speed Record for Britain and Sir Charles Wakefield s Trophy for Maximum speed, is aptly named, for m design she exactly suggests an instrument fashioned for a straight flight at high speed. The "Golden Arrow" is fitted with a Napier engine which develops 900 b.h.p. at 3,400 r.p.m. To win back the Speed Record from Ray Keech, of America, Major Seagrave will have to reach the enormous speed of 207.5526 m.p.h., or roughly 4 miles a minute! The gear ratios are: Top, 1,475 to 1; Second, 2,195 to 1, and first 4.47 to 1. The theoretical speeds corresponding to the engine speed at which maximum power is developed are ,246 m.p.h., 166 m.p.h. and 81 m.p.h. respectively. The "Golden Arrow" will reach a speed of 160 m.p.h. before it is necessary to change into top gear. The tyres are 37 m. by 7in. The maximum speed of the wheels will be about 2,300 r.p.m. The car weighs 2'/ 2 tons, and her general dimensions are interesting, particularly the height, which is only 3ft. 9in. The wheel-base and track are 13ft. 4in. and sft. respectively.
