It is extremely doubtful whether trophies are althogether beneficial to the spirit which interprovincial and other games should • be. carried on. While it is true that cricket does not lend itself to demonstrations of feeling as d.o. other games, yet the demeanour of players, both on the field and off, often gives a clue to the fact that, all is not well. Spectators, too, are not free from blame. Partisanship is an excellent thing, but it should be recognized that keenness on the part of opponents can occasionally be justified and docs not always merit jeering and abuse. It sometimes seems that the sporting spirit, of the possession of which we, as a nation, pride ourselves, has been diluted by the water of parochial enthusiasm. The honors, of the Plunket Shield game between Wellington and i Auckland were with Wellington, and they owe much to Lowry's handling of the limited bowling m their ranks. He carefully nursed Henderson and McGirr with the result that they came to light just when needed. While these two bore the brunt of the fray, the relief bowlers were interposed very judiciously. Lowry's placing of the field for the varying styles of the opposing batsmen was also a lesson m the craft.
