A REAL CHAMPION
Dowfeett Beats Handicap And Field (From "N.Z. Truth's" Swimming Correspondent.) Norman Dowsett, : national sprint swimming champion, , will, take , all sorts of beating next week, Cameron or no Cameron. JJB has been training assiduously but n very quietly during the past few weeks and some well-informed people look to him to knock Billy Cameron's unofficial record sideways. In the fresh water carnival at Dannevirke recently, Norman unofficially broke his own New s Zealand fresh water record by covering the hundred m 59sec- — 3/5 of a second faster than the recognized mark. It was not the time that counted so much as the way Dowsett did it. The fans laughed when Dowsett splashed the water after McMinns, the limit man, had covered a third of the course. > Then" they gasped as Dowsett cut down the leeway with fast and powerful strokes.. Over the last thirty yards the champion's task still looked impossible. He gathered himself and literally hurled himself at the finishing post to touch down a fraction m front of McMmns. Dowsett showed wonderful speed, and bulldog pugnacity, two qualities which should help him to beat Cameron and the record next week.
