WHY NOT?
The Purse To Suit The Packet
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Auckland Rep.) The mighty decreases m "tote" returns at Alexandra Park this season are giving club officials something to scratch' their heads over. A SUGGESTION is being broadcast tiiat m framing the programmes for next season the stake-money is likely to. be reduced. Of course clubs have the option of giving more than they are compelled to by the rules of trotting, and m this respect the A.T.C. has been liberal. However, when the position is summed up it is only m order that such stakes were forthcoming, for owners conti-bute by way of nominations and acceptance lees their full share, if not more. So far at Epsom this season three meetings have beep decided and for fifty-five handicap events approximately £28,700 Was doled out to be competed for. Towards this sum owners were asked to "dip south" to the tune of about £4444. ' Nominations ran away with £1581 and acceptances £2863. Taking these figures into consideration it is the owners who help swell the cash-box for various clubs, and if m future stt.kes are to be reduced then the cost of starting either pacer *or trotter should m fairness be reduced accordingly.
