Suoh a type is Angus McNeill, whose thirty years of life has not provided him -yvith sufficient sense to know Avhen he has a good thing, and when to Btop. Originally McNeill was a. seaman, but after getting into trouble, he took a position as cook at a Christchurch boarding-house. For stealing a bicycle and for false pretences, McNeill served four months' Imprisonment last year and shortly after gaining his freedom he committed a similar offence. ' With a cheque for £10, he obtained from Patrick Reddington, a.n hotel- ! keeper, of Islington, a bottle of Avhisky and £5 m cash, but as the publican Avas short of cash at the time, McNeill was requested to call back for the balance. Not satisfied with the proceeds of his theft, McNeill' went back for the balance, but m the meantime the publican had ascertained that the cheque was a forgery. McNeill pleaded that drink was his trouble, and he- will have nine. months m gaol m which to try to overcome the craving.
