THEIR BEST HAVE GONE

CANTERBURY SPLASHES

Weak Provincial Side For Tile

Championships

STRENGTH IN POLO TEAM

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Christchurch Representative).

Canterbury swimming people are quite iprepared to see the Yaldhurst Shield change hands at ; Wellington next month.

THE provincial representation, which was announced last week, is mainly> evidence of the lean season the sport is experiencing m Canterbury this season, and beyond; Alec Stokes it is hard to point to a competitor who has outstanding prospects of success. Stokes s\yam second to Lindsay m each distance event last'year, and as he •is going belter this season, his prospects of lowering Lindsay's dolors seem bright. „ v .•■:.■.. ; . Bridson, of course, must enter into distance calculations, even .though it isi his first year .m senior ranks. Stokes illustrated at Amberly recently when he won > the half-mile provincial championship, that he is m better form now than he has ever been before, and it will not surprise his Canterbury, admirers if he comes back with more than one distance title, whether Lindsay starts or not. . 1 Len. Moorehouse and Clarrie Herd vyill contest the backstroke and breaststroke events respectively,, but ort performances it. would appear that both will have i to. strike, their colors. 1 Miss. Gertrude Smith, who will contest the ladies' diving, is a graceful artist' in straight diving, but will be found out m the fancy items. George Low,, the junior boy, should do well, but his sister, In the junior girl's class, is rather young and small for the older girls she is likely to meet at Wellington. '.- She has a free, unrestricted style, and the experience gained on the trip will do her good. McConyille and: Miss Craig, m the intermediate class, would need to swim above themselves to carry off, any Dominion honors. Though the polo team has not been announced at time of writing, it is almost . certain that another powerful combination will be got together m spite of the defection of, two stalwarts m Atkinson and Eales. both of whom have removed from the province. Canterbury have, suffered only one defeat — at Napier m 1915 m this event since 1911, and what beats them should win. , ; Whoever Selector Annan decides on for his final choice, it is certain that the polo team will be comprised of thoroughly experienced .'. players.v ■ In the aggregate, the team is not so well balanced as -m former seasons, and for the greater part of the tournament their share must be looking on.
