CONLAN'S KINK
Showing Affection With Knife THREATTO WIFE (From "N.Z. Truth's" Christchurch . Rep.) • Some husbands . have queer methods of expressing affection. William Henry Con Jan, a painter, of Christchurch, not having seen his wife for eleven months, paid her a surprise visit, and, if her story is true, his affectionate advances culminated m- a threat to cut her throat. PONLAN, it. would appear, had. more chances than the average husband. i A year or so ago his wife realized i that the nuptial knot was slipping, and i for his cruel habits towards her and I his unceaßing fondness for liquor, she i was successful m having a decree nisi made m her favor. .-. i Conlan, however, made her all sorts of promises, and she took him back, only to find that he was a gay deceiver, and that his promises of reformation were like so many pie-crusts. On one occasion, she told the court, she and her son hadto make 'a hurried exit through a window at ! 3.30 a.m. to escape Conlan's violence. . A deed of separation was drawn up,' under which Conlan was to , contribute thirty shillings weekly toi wards the support of his wife, but he i has not paid her anything, and at the present time is £70 m arrears. From February last until Christmas ; Mrs. Conlan has been w,orking m l Auckland, and she came ; to, Christi church to nurse her daughter, who I lives at "Woolston. : On the evening of January 2, Conlan, ' ! accompanied by a friend, paid a surprise visit on her yat her daughter's house. . "I was standing m the kitchen holding a dog, and Conlan, after asking me to kiss him, remarked that I would sooner kiss the dog," his wife told the court. "He lifted a knife and threatened to cut my throat, so I ran out of the house and he fpllowed me, repeating the threat. • ; ■ His friend then induced Conlari to leave the place/ ! Counsel' for Conlan . said that defendant was quite respectable except when he ,'. started drinking, and he was agreeable to enter into sureties to keep. th.c peace. ; An order was made, m two sums of £50, -binding ."C.ohlan.: over. 'to keep the peace towards his wife for twelve months. ■ ■.■..•
