QHINING, glass-topped counters, rer O fleeting the glare of electric lights, tier upon. tier of polished oak fixtures, bustling assistants ready to supply the wants of the shopping male . . . and over all presides Syd. Hopkinson, Auckland's most cheerful salesman. . . ..,.•• There are few places m the Dominion m which he has not shown himself at some time or other, and the result is that Syd., has a host of friends throughout both islands. It is some time now since he left the Cathedral City, but that he is not forgottenin the south is proved by the readiness of . his former friends and acquaintances to extend the glad hand to- nim whenever he stops their Avay on holiday. Syd. was not long m the mercery department of the firm of Fowlds before Auckland took a fancy to his smile, and now he is as well known as the firm itself. ' '. , Hitting a golf ball around the Glendowie Links is his favorite sport, and rumor hath it -that he is capable of reaching the flag m the allotted number of strokes. . But golf is not a serious business with Syd., any more than is the- business of living, for he looks upon the world with, a smile that is reflected m the faces of all whom he meets, and his popularity grows with the years.
