TYRES AND THEIR CARE
The use of oversize tyres will enable many motorists to get much greater satisfaction and longer mileage than with regular tyres.
MOTOR-CARS are fitted with tyres that are ample for any ordinary
use, provided they are inflated, to the correct " pressure. However, most motorists abuse their tyres by overloading them and through failure to keep them "pumped up." | Oversizing allows a much greater margin of safety and m the long run justifies the extra expense. There are many advantages to using oversize tyres, inducting more comfortable riding, petter braking with less tendency to skid, and less tyre trouble. The larger tyre Is not so easily cut or bruised and the tread wears much longer. Last but not least, the oversize tyre will average far greater mileage, which m terms of cost per mile means economy. In tyres as m everything else, it pays to buy dependable and well-knowji makes, even though you may pay a little more. Changing tyres round from time to time will result m longer tyre life add better all-round service. When a motorist buys a new spare it is advisable to put it on the right rear wheel and give that tyre a rest for a while. The other tyres should
also be changed, too, left front to left rear, and so on. Each wheel puts certain strains on a tyre different from that of the other wheels, and by using the tyre on each In turn the wear is i evenly distributed and 1 the tyre lasts i longer and, gives better service. It is also important to have tyres looked over frequently for minor cuts and bruises, etc., and to have small repairs made promptly. Tyres should be inflated to the correct pressure as under-inflation of a few pounds will often result m the loss of hundreds of miles of useful service. .Valve caps screwed , down tightly by hand should always be used to prevent air leaks. It is also important to have the wheels aligned. . A tin of tyre paint costs very little, yet its uses can save -the rapid deterioration of a tyre from exposure. A Keeping the tyres painted also improves the appearance of a car. Few owners realize that the. tyres rapidly deteriorate through the accumulation of rust m the rims, and it will be found to pay handsomely to remove the tyres completely at short intervals and paint the rims with & proper rim paint. ■
