IF THE OIL FAILS
■What To. Do When Engine Seizes WITH modern reliable engine oiling systems piston seizure is rare, but it /may still occur, either through failure of the oil supply or through driving a new or rebored engine too fast. Warning signs are sluggishness of the engine, sometimes accompanied by knocking. Disengage the clutch immediately, and stop the engine. Wait for the" engine to cool down, should a test with the starting handle have shown unusual stiffness. Then, if it has freed itself, the car may be driven carefully and slowly, after pouring a little oil into each spark plug hole. Should the cause be failure of the oil pump, shown by the pressure gauge not registering, do not attempt to drive the car until so much -Oil has been poured into the crankcase that the connecting rods dip. This will be indicated by blue smoke from the .exhaust. Then head for . the nearest garage.
