SOME SHOCKING RIDING
There Really Is Urgent Meed For Apprentice Tuition (From; ''N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) . Some shocking riding was witnessed at' Ellerslie and not. merely on the part of apprentices. But on the general run of things, some of the apprentices gave awful exhibitions. IT seems that there is some need for i this connection it appeared to "Truth" a course of tuition, under capable; that m one particular casfat leaat a
I riding masters, if ;the saddle-sitters! I of the future are to '■ be termed even I reasonable exponents of the riding I profession. 1 It was absolutely shameful to note ■ some of the mistakes made by horseimen boasting long experience; and ithere seemed to be missing from many ■a lack of the necessary nerve to, make ■for success. ■ In the case of the majority of the ■light boys, lack of strength played a repeat part ill moderate displays of Biorsemanship, while the absence of ftound judgment m distance events was Hbainful. to witness. , H In some cases owners knew they B| were doing the wrong thing when HB they put up horsemen unsuitable H for the particular horses they B& were riding. . HrThey absolutely threw winning Htwpecta away by so doing, and m
i Dig. race was tnrown away. ■ There is certainly a genuine call for the better education of apprentices if horsemen are to be developed m this land of the calibre of Bob. Derrett, Percy White, Hector Gray, Charley Jenkins and Roy Reed at his best. Not because they headed the list of winning horsemen at the Auckland Cup meeting, but because of their merit, were Bert Tinker and Harry Goldfinch head and shoulders above the rest of the horsemen seen out during the summer carnival. , They, both displayed head work of worth besides finishing ability. . In the case of Goldfinch, he seems better over short than long courses, though it has to be remembered he was on T'e Kara when that horse deadheated with Muraahi m the Auckland Cup.
