breadwinner. ' , \ pONVfiYANCES, medicines and speV/ cial treatments all comprise an additional drain oh the resources either of the patient or the guardian. But m Christohuroh there has beeH existing.' for. over .forty years an organization with humanitarian views, rejoicing under the name of the Hospital Lady Visitors' Association and Destitute Patients' Fund, and 'its record of social welfare work is a notable one. ,_ As the latter portion of its name . implies, its particular hobby is m providing for those Unable to provide for themselves^ but its scope embraces every ' hospital patient and the activities of , its members tend -to brighten the monotonous life bf the hospital . dweller. Under the leadership of Lady Rhodes, and the executive direction of Mifes Adeline Turner, the society has now embarked on its forty-seoond year of helpful service to the afflicted — working quietly, but most effectively. Where the patients ar,e unable to pay fares to and from the hospital, the society helps them, and m oases of hardship where loss bf time and wages is incurred through time spent . m hospital, the patients are assisted m ' their own homes. The members give much of their time to personal visits to the hospital, spending cheery hours with the patients, and brightening their outlook i by supplying literature, flowers ahd the ■ like. That even time' spent m hospital cannot be regarded as wasted tlmo, the society provides teachers who Coach the patients m needlework, raffia work • and other .forms of handicraft, and provides the materials, and the Sale of patients' work each year contributes an acceptable item to the society funds. The functions of the society also Include the arranglhg of concerts, and its membeVs interest themselves m the , Adeline Turner rest cottage for nurses '. at Sumner and the Nurses' Memorial Chapel Which is used by all denominations. • The most important work of the society, however, is its assistance •to the patients it sends to the Rhodes % Memorial Convalescent ! Home, and last year a sum of well 5 over £ 500 was spent m this direc--5 tion. '. The provision of clothing and seasonal gifts to the patient* U Wtothe*
