The Lost Chord
MAN may, as the hymn books tell us, *■ * want but little here below, but occasionally the female of tlie species expects quite, a bit. ■•,-.. A wandering lady prowled into a Wellington music shop the other day, and said, with characteristic vagueness: •-■'. "I want a record — one that Galli Curci sings.". Being blessed with many of 'Galli Curci's vocal efforts, the attendant naturally asked which, precisely, the. good lady would prefer. "Oh," said she, smiling helpfully, "I don't know the name, but it goes like; this— La, la, la ...•.." Thereupon followed a succession of trills and warblings, very inter- : esting, no doubt; but the attendant failed to discern therein a" likeness 7to any known record of Galli Curci's. And the end of the tale was a lost sale, a much annoyed lady, who went out convinced that the young man behind the counter had np ear. for music, and an attendant who is still wondering what women Avill want next. .# #■ # A Jaunty "Judith " QNE of the only three New 7 Zealand V members of the British Drama League is Mrs. Marjorie Hannah. The two others are Professor Shelley and Elizabeth' Blake, both of whom take vital parts and interest m the amateur stage world of this country. Mrs. Hannah, returning from England, founded the One Act Play Club m Wellington and has' had two" years of successful production, selecting the best of the moderns for representation. Great care is taken over choosing of casts, with
a view to assuring that each actor arid actress shall enter into the spirit of a role. Mrs. Hannah is president of the Victoria University Dramatic Club, and for- two years past has produced their plays m the Concert Chamber. "Cousin Kate" was this year's successful effort. Lectur- ' ing on British drama before the W.E.A; fills another corner of the clock's hours, and last year Mrs. Hannah produced some plays among the inmates of Point Halswell, where stands the Women's Borstal Institute. "And," she says, "very good actors many of them were, too."
