GOLD JACKET'S CUP

Kohara Made A Race of It, but The Winner Hung On With Bulldog Tenacity

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Eepresentative) . Keeping up his winning sequence, Gold Jacket battled it out with Kohara iri the Auckland Cup, to be adjudged the winner by a narrow margin. . •

THE going was against the register-, ing of fast times, but m doing their last mile m 2.14 and the, full distance m a tick over 4.30, was, under the conditions, rather good. Kohara and Gold Jacket were air ways to the fore, racing m behind Padlock most of the distance. "With the home turn m sight Kohara was shoved along. He had a slight . advantage over Gold Jacket once round the turn, ' but the Gold Bell gelding, with bulldog tenacity, never peaked for a second and scored a popular win. Kohara's driver reckoned that with a shade better run he would have turned up trumps, for the Taranaki horse was compelled to foot it all the way to keep a decent position. The favorite, Prince Pointer, never received a clear run and was hemmed m till the straight was reached.

Still, he was not compelled to cover any extra ground, and had he on the day been as good ad his reputation, he would have finished with more dash than was the case.

Queen's Own ran a surprisingly good race, but Padlock, after. acting as pilot, petered out when the whalebone came into play. The only other to be at all prominent was Cardinal Logan, and outside of Henderson's charge, nothing else apr pealed. With better weather conditions, I the event probably would have ■ proved more thrilling, for, with the leaders footing it strongly from the word go, the backmarkers were left m the cold. Two real racehorses battled it out, each with a little the best of it on past performances. Had the track been as dry as a bone the issue may have been the same.
