Sarsaparilla smothered his nine colleagues m the Stewards.' Handicap at Christchurch. He is at' home m mud, and though Nighborn, Wild Hebe and Nelson Ata can perform well under adverse conditions, Sarsaparilla outstayed them over the last furlong.

Nighborn was first into the straight, but -two breaks over the last furlong cost him second money. Katute went solidly, but tired to a walk at the end of ten furlongs.

Nelson A'ta finished fourth after making 1 a bad break at the «nd of seven furlongs.
